Other accessories for his martial arts might be a good idea. Like a duffel bag to take with him to classes, a really nice water bottle, stuff like that.

The documentary “Choke” on Rickson Gracie. Any DVD featuring the Gracie family or Eddie Bravo.

eddie bravo books are the best btw. other than books there are alot of instructional videos for various skill levels, also combatsports.com has a wide variety of training gear. i also believe that supply magazine offers grappling and gi jiu-jitsu supplies but overall its more geared towards wrestling

Instructional DVD’s are good. When you get into a martial art you want to learn as much as you can and while there are alot of great books with good pictures to illustrate the moves, it can’t beat Audio/Video demonstrations for learning complex movements.
Another gift idea is to get him another Gi. If he loves training so much he should have more than 1.

maybe a pair of flip-flops or sandals… they slip on and off easy and are convenient at the gym or at tournaments… or maybe a rash guard if he wears a tshirt under his Gi or competes in no-gi at the tournaments also.

My bet:
A brand new gi: Koral gis are my favorites.
DVDs instructionals: Especially those made by Demian Maia or Saulo Ribeiro.
DVD documentals: Legacy -inspired on Renzo Gracie-, Choke, or Arte Suave.
Books: My favorite by far is Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro. That book quickly raise up the quality of the game.
Private lessons: A couple of hours with a great instructor is also a great gift.
Thanks for your concerning, hope my gf does the same as you.
Best regards

A gracie jiujitsu book on submissions, theory, and technique would be amazing. My favorite out of all BJJ gifts.
